The interaction between language and cognition greatly influences the manifestation of symptoms of aphasia following a stroke, the degree of recovery, and the response to therapy. Effective management of aphasia requires consideration of specific language deficits and any coexisting cognitive problems, which can both be evaluated and treated by speech-language pathologists. This foundation course reviews the relationship between language and cognition, the impact of cognitive deficits on communication in aphasia, and approaches that may be used to assess cognition co-occurring with aphasia.
