Introduction to Aquatic Physical Therapy

Aquatic therapy is a unique intervention which can be very effective when matched to the right patient. This course introduces physical therapy professionals to the benefits and most appropriate patients for aquatic therapy. Learners will understand what makes the aquatic environment different than land and how to take full advantage of the properties of water such as buoyancy, viscosity, hydrostatic pressure, and temperature. Considerations for safety and risk management are presented for conditions such as cardiopulmonary compromise, diabetes, seizures, and infection. Training requirements necessary to provide aquatic therapy are discussed.

Wendy holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University in Biology, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Florida A&M University. She has more than 25 years of experience working as a Physical Therapist in multiple care settings, including acute care, inpatient rehab, independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and outpatient orthopedics. Emily Dunlap is a physical therapist from Austin, Texas. She spent most of her career as an aquatic physical therapist working in a variety of settings including inpatient rehabilitation hospitals and outpatient orthopedic clinics before transitioning to teaching and research. Emily is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and developed the APTA Academy of Aquatic Physical Therapy Clinical Competency Certificate program. She was honored with several awards for her work on the certificate program including the prestigious Judy Cirullo award for outstanding promotion of aquatic physical therapy. She authored chapters in three aquatic therapy related textbooks and has published original research on topics related to rehabilitation in the aquatic setting. Presently, Emily is the owner of Aquatic Therapy Pro doing a variety of work as a researcher, clinician, and consultant for education, and is certified in Halliwick, Bad Ragaz Ring Method, Ai Chi, and Watsu (level III). She runs an aquatic rehabilitation journal club that has international participation. She is also a graduate student in the Cardiovascular Aging Research Laboratory at the University of Texas in Austin working towards her Ph.D. in exercise physiology. Emily’s graduate school goal includes contributing to the ‘pool’ of evidence on aquatic rehabilitation.
