Food allergies are becoming increasingly more prevalent among children and adolescents. While not all allergic reactions result in anaphylaxis, many children still require emergency treatment. There are several techniques for diagnosing food allergies, but the gold standard remains an oral food challenge. Despite the risk of anaphylaxis and death, there is no curative treatment for food allergies other than allergen avoidance. However, allergen immunotherapy is currently being tested. Staying up to date on the developing trends for the prevention and treatment of food allergies is vital for all healthcare providers. This course will review the different types of food allergies, and ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent them in children and adolescents.
