Integrated Care for Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders

Green Clock Hours: 1.00

Many patients who present for treatment are doubly challenged by the presence of both a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder. These co-occurring conditions are associated with greater symptom severity and poorer treatment outcomes (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2020). Early screening and assessment can support early identification and treatment of these disorders. Parallel or integrated treatment of both conditions at the same time is the gold standard for treatment of these co-occurring conditions, as the conditions have bidirectional impact on each other (SAMHSA, 2022).

The goal of this course is to provide nursing and social work professionals with education about the co-occurrence of mental health and substance use disorders and to examine ways of integrating mental health and substance use disorder treatment.
