Suicide is among the most common causes of death in the United States (National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2019). As a public safety professional, your encounters with people experiencing mental health challenges, including suicidal behavior, have risen exponentially. Up to 10% of your interactions with the public are related to mental health crises (Osteen et al., 2021). It is essential to know warning signs and risk factors, as well as how to respond to a person who is suicidal. The goal of this course is to provide law enforcement officers with the tools to identify suicide warning signs and risk factors, prepare for a mental health crisis call, and to respond to suicidal individuals in culturally sensitive ways.
