Moving Beyond Cultural Competence: Cultural Humility in Policing

Many factors can influence a person’s culture. This can complicate a law enforcement officers’ role in interacting safely, effectively, and sensitively with the people they serve. While law enforcement agencies across the county aim to train their officers on the best approaches for interacting with people with diverse cultural backgrounds, the traditional ways are no longer effective. Being “color blind” doesn’t work. Knowing about “a culture” is no longer adequate. Cultural humility calls on officers to reflect on their own cultural experiences and their impacts as well as to take steps to learn about other people’s cultural experiences on an individual level. This approach will improve the interactions between law enforcement officers and the people they serve. This course was developed in partnership with the California School for Forensic Studies at Alliant International University. The goal of this course is to provide law enforcement professionals with an understanding of cultural humility and strategies for enhancing it.
