Respiratory therapists often assist with transporting patients from one location to another. Outside the hospital room or unit, emergency resources may not be readily available, which increases the risk of adverse events. Whether the transport is within the hospital (intra-hospital) or to another facility (inter-hospital), members of the transport team must consider potential problems that could arise and take appropriate precautions to reduce the risk of harm, avoid unnecessary delays, and optimize patient outcomes. A good question to ask is: What problems are most likely to occur that could endanger the patient and what can I do to best prevent and respond to them should they arise?
