Because of constraints on resources and available treatment areas, emergency department (ED) nursing staff must triage patients to ensure that the sickest patients receive the most efficient and timely resources. High-quality patient outcomes and effective ED operations begin with rapid and accurate triage decisions. A reliable and valid triage system will help nurses appropriately care for ED patients. The goal of this module is to provide nurses with an understanding of the history, types, and methods of ED triage, with an emphasis on the five-level triage systems.
