We know in doing this important work that we witness grief in many of our sick children and their family members. As pediatric healthcare professionals, we experience a tremendous amount of loss as we think of the many children we have cared for, whether they were in the hospital undergoing a surgical procedure, learning to walk again with rehabilitation, or at home redefining life. These memories and losses can accumulate over time and can cause healthcare professionals to experience compassion fatigue and burnout if not acknowledged. This module will assist you in facilitating excellent bereavement care for family members and friends after the death of a child. This is particularly difficult, as having a child die is the most agonizing experience any family member can possibly bear. You must practice good self-care so you can continue this sacred work exceedingly well. The goal of this course is to provide nurses in hospice and palliative care with knowledge of loss, grief, and bereavement in pediatric palliative care.
