Coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction, commonly called a heart attack, represent a considerable impact to health worldwide. Given the significance of heart disease to health across populations, it is unsurprising that a variety of procedures and pieces of clinical equipment have been designed to help address these issues. This module will discuss the uses and history of interventional cardiology procedures. Coronary lesions and the applicable classification system will be described. Guiding catheters, guide wires, balloons, and stents, along with their uses and characteristics will also be discussed. Relevant aspects of anticoagulation and anti-platelet therapy will be explained.
