The evaluation and management of acute and chronic pain are complicated and challenging for physicians and other healthcare providers. Prescription opioids have a role in pain management and can be beneficial for certain patients in improving pain and restoring overall function. A comprehensive understanding of current opioid prescribing guidelines is essential for pharmacists to ensure patients safety. Additionally, clinicians may discuss the risks and benefits of opioid medications with patients before and during treatment to help create realistic treatment expectations and ensure patient safety. Pharmacists should also be alerted to signs of substance use disorder and mitigation strategies to promote healthy outcomes.
The goal of this course is to educate pharmacists on the role of prescription opioids in pain management and the safe prescribing practice for opioid medications.
