Behavioral health professionals include multiple disciplines, which are all responsible for the safety of the clients they care for. Even though each discipline has its own set of ethics to guide practice, they are generally similar in terms of the importance of avoiding harm to the client.
Client safety requires careful planning and consistent vigilance. Any behavioral health professional can jeopardize client safety by committing a medical or a treatment error. While it is unrealistic to think that you can prevent all errors, there are steps you can take to reduce their occurrences.
The goal of this course is to provide education to entry-level professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, alcohol and drug counselors, psychologists, nurses, and social workers working in the health and human services field about types, prevalence, causes, and consequences of medical and treatment errors in the behavioral health setting, as well as how to address them and reduce risk of future errors.

Jennifer received her Bachelor's degrees in Social Work and Criminal Justice from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Master's degree in Social Work with a Certificate in Substance Abuse Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has over 13 years of experience providing counseling and case management to a variety of populations. Her clinical interests are motivational interviewing, harm reduction, psychosis, LGBTQ+ issues, gender diversity, and integrated care. She has experience working as a substance use disorder specialist on an assertive community treatment team, and as a therapist in a local hospital outpatient clinic that specializes in schizophrenia. She also has experience working with pregnant and parenting people with substance use disorders, people that are justice involved, people living with infectious diseases, and people across the spectrum of gender and sexuality. Cecelia also has multiple certifications in different fields, including military sexual trauma, PTSD, Co-occurring disorders, motivational interviewing, and positive psychology. Cecelia also has multiple certifications through the World Health Organizations and The Federal Emergency Management Agency. Cecelia has 29 years of experience in the medical field, in which 23 years of that experience is in behavioral sciences. In her spare time, she loves spending time with her family, rescuing dogs, and teaching yoga and mindfulness.
