The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) workgroup standard for fetal heart rate monitoring assessment and categorization, first proposed in 1997 and subsequently updated in 2008 was meant to promote commonality of FHR tracing nomenclature and interpretation. Based on these recommendations, a three-tiered categorization pattern based on the visual assessment of the fetal heart rate pattern was adopted.

Subject Matter Expert: Dr. Patricia Hensley, DNP, MHA, BSN, RNC-OBDr. Cusick earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio. He completed his residency at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Post-residency, he completed a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Cusick is board-certified in OB/GYN and Maternal-Fetal Medicine, is an ARDMS-accredited sonographer, and is certified in first-trimester screening through the Fetal Medicine Foundation. He is an assistant clinical professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and at the Quinnipiac University Frank Netter School of Medicine. Dr. Cusick holds membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine, and American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and serves on the board of The Fetal Medicine Foundation.
