Handling patient refusals can be a challenge, especially when the patient will be at a higher risk for poor outcomes. Therapists must balance respecting a patient’s right to refuse while at the same time justifying a patient’s need for therapy. Rehabilitation services may not be appropriate for patients who lack of motivation to participate. Additional challenges include the time, money, and productivity costs of refusal which must be considered. It is also important to know how to accept a refusal, how to document a refusal, and when to discharge a patient from caseload. This course will model best practices for therapy providers to manage patient refusals and document appropriately.

Mitzi A. Kweder, MS/CCC-SLP, has been a speech-language pathologist since 1996. She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in speech-language pathology in New York. She has experience in several settings with both pediatrics and geriatrics but spent most of her recent career in the director role in skilled nursing facilities. During that time, she also directed affiliated home health and outpatient operations. Currently, she is the Director of Quality and Standards with AdvantageCare Rehabilitation. In this position, she oversees clinical and operations standards in order to maintain and improve quality of care delivery. She also plays an active role in denials, policy, and compliance processes to promote adherence to laws and regulations of several bodies governing healthcare. Susan Almon-Matangos, MS/CCC-SLP, is a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist with over 30 years of experience. She obtained her bachelor's degree in psychology from Jacksonville State University and her Master of Science degree in speech-language pathology from The University of Alabama. She worked with clients of all ages and a variety of diagnostic conditions in school, hospital, skilled nursing facility, outpatient clinic, and home health settings. In her previous role as a national clinical director for a large contract therapy company, she created training programs for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology related to the clinical rehabilitation needs of older adults in post-acute care.
