Adhesions form chiefly following an abdominopelvic surgery radiation therapy, or inflammatory process such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), or diverticular disease (Tabibian et al., 2017). Fortunately, the majority of adhesions do not cause symptoms. However, in rare cases adhesive disease may develop, often resulting in bowel obstructions, chronic abdominal or pelvic pain, or infertility. A laparoscopic lysis of adhesions, sometimes referred to as laparoscopic adhesiolysis, is the standard treatment for adhesive disease. With more technologically refined tools, this procedure can be done rapidly with excellent outcomes.
The goal of this course is to equip CSTs with knowledge of the fundamentals of a laparoscopic lysis of adhesions procedure and the potential complications.
