Working with Adult and Juvenile Offenders with Chronic Illness

Green Clock Hours: 1.50

Adults and juveniles held in correctional or detention facilities have a higher prevalence of chronic and infectious health conditions (Hogan et al., 2020). Some people enter the facility with existing chronic health conditions. Others may experience the onset of a chronic condition because of their incarceration or detainment. Correctional and detention facilities have legal and ethical responsibilities to give medical care to people in their custody with chronic health conditions. Direct supervision officers, referring to officers working in either adult or juvenile custodial facilities, have a responsibility to recognize and respond when inmates or residents display symptoms related to chronic health conditions. The goal of this course is to provide information to direct supervision staff working in adult and juvenile correctional facilities related to chronic health conditions common among correctional populations and to offer guidance on how to respond to observed symptoms.
