Consumers of mental health services die decades earlier than the general population largely due to preventable, treatable, and modifiable risk factors and conditions. Included in these risk factors and conditions is obesity, one of the most common factors linking behavioral health disorders with significant morbidity and mortality. Serious health consequences including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, stroke, sleep apnea, and various cancers can accompany excess body weight, but it is also a roadblock to an individual’s behavioral health recovery.
This course is designed for behavioral health professionals who work with those individuals who are at risk for becoming overweight or have obesity. In this course, you will learn the prevalence of obesity in the general population and the behavioral health population, as well as the contributing factors in persons with behavioral health problems. You will study evidence-based strategies and approaches to identify and treat overweight and obesity.
The goal of this course is to provide addictions, behavioral health counseling, marriage and family therapy, nursing, nutrition and dietetics, psychology, and social work professionals in health and human services with information and skill development to address overweight and obesity in individuals with behavioral health disorders.
