Dementia is the 5th leading cause of death in people over the age of 65 and despite literature focus on this disease state, no new medications have been developed that are indicated for disease state in over 10 years. With the increasing geriatric population, clinicians need to understand the benefits of discontinuing cognitive-based therapy at end of life and manage symptoms via non-pharmacological methods and medications other than antipsychotics.
