Correctional facilities have a responsibility to ensure that medications are dispensed to detainees/inmates accurately and safely. They are charged with following federal and state laws as well as developing policies and procedures about medication administration specific to their facility.The role of the correctional officer in medication administration varies by facility. While you may not have the direct responsibility of dispensing medications, you likely have other responsibilities related to the process. As such, it is important that you are familiar with the proper procedures for dispensing medications.The goal of this course is to provide correctional officers working in adult jails and prisons with information on medication administration and their potential roles and responsibilities in this important process.

Mrs. Cobb is a Lead SME Writer/Trainer at Relias. Her primary writing responsibilities are in the Health and Human Services vertical, in the content areas of public safety and behavioral health. Colonel Jared Schechter, with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, is actively working in the field of corrections and jailing services with over 20 years of experience working in and managing the largest jail in the State of Kansas in Wichita. Jared is currently the Jail Administrator and in charge of the 1,206 bed Sedgwick County Adult Local Detention Facility, 180-bed Jail Annex, and the general welfare of the entire inmate population of approximately 1,550 inmates at this time, including inmates housed in other counties. Jared oversees a staff of 300 in the Detention Bureau and a budget of over $32 million.
Jared received his Master of Science in Administration of Justice degree from the University of Louisville in 2013. He also has a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resource Development from Southwestern (KS) College. Jared is an adjunct professor at Wichita State University Tech where he instructs courses on Agency Administration, Corrections, Criminal Law, and Introduction to Criminal Justice.
He is a graduate of the 125th Administrative Officers Course and Police Executive Leadership Graduate Program through the Southern Police Institute. Additionally, he is a graduate of the Large Jail Administrator Program through the National Institute of Corrections. Jared is a Certified Jail Manager and Certified Correctional Manager. He serves as commissioner for the Jail Manager Certification Commission through the American Jail Association, is on the Conference Planning Committee for the American Jail Association, and serves as an executive board member for the Kansas Correctional Association. Jared is also an auditor for Adult Local Detention Facilities through the American Correctional Association. Jared is a member of the American Jail Association and the American Correctional Association.
