Foot Care in Diabetes

Green Clock Hours: 0.50

Diabetes mellitus can cause serious lower extremity complications that threaten life and limb. Peripheral neuropathy and vascular disease can lead to ulcers, arthropathy, and infections that cause pain, impair mobility, and may even lead to amputation. These complications can be minimized or prevented by diabetes management and proper foot care. This includes wearing appropriate footwear and having regular foot examinations to assess for sensation, ulceration, and signs of soft tissue and toenail infection. Patient education is also an essential part of diabetic foot care.

The goal of this course is to provide nurses, health educators, and dietitians in acute care settings with an overview of diabetic foot pathologies and strategies for treatment and prevention.
