In 2018, more than 1.7 million Veterans received treatment through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for a mental health diagnosis, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive disorders, and anxiety disorders other than PTSD (VA, 2019b). In 2017, about 17 Veterans died by suicide each day (VA, 2019a). It is these statistics that illustrate the importance of mental health training for all healthcare professionals working with the Veteran population.
In this course, you will learn about special considerations for working with Veterans and their families. You will also learn about the mental health conditions common in Veterans, including posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, substance use disorder, and complicated grief. In addition, you will learn about the identification of suicide risk in Veterans with mental health and/or substance use disorders as well as practical ways to manage suicidality.
The goal of this course is to provide mental and medical health professionals with an overview of mental health conditions commonly diagnosed in Veterans.
