Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that gradually worsens over time. The hallmark feature of AD is cognitive impairment such as memory loss, communication difficulties, impaired judgment, and confusion resulting in a decline in functional ability as well as behavioral and personality changes. Caring for persons with cognitive impairments is complex and multifaceted, with every person with AD having a different plan of care based on their needs, preferences, and abilities, and this plan sometimes needs to change from day to day. The goal of care for the person with AD is to help the individual maintain the functional ability for as long as possible and improve the quality of life. This course will review the different pharmacological treatments available for AD, as well as recent research on the effectiveness of the available medications, new advances into the treatment of the disease, and alternative treatments that may be used.
