The endocrine system carries out an astonishing variety of functions through its glands and hormones, including regulating metabolism, helping the body fight infection, and overseeing growth, maturation, and aging. In this lesson, we will first discuss the endocrine system in general, including how the system works, what hormones are, and how do they accomplish their functions. Next, we will examine the principal endocrine glands and the hormones they secrete. Finally, we will take a look at several minor endocrine glands and the functions they perform.
