In this lesson, we will first discuss the endocrine system in general, including how the system works, what hormones are, and how do they accomplish their functions. Next, we will examine the principal endocrine glands and the hormones they secrete. Finally, we will take a look at several minor endocrine glands and the functions they perform.

Describe the mechanism of action of peptide hormones.
Describe the mechanism of action of steroid hormones.
Explain how hormones bind to receptors on target cells.
Compare negative and positive feedback mechanisms.
Specify the difference between endocrine and exocrine glands.
Describe the role of the hypothalamus.
Describe the functions of the anterior and posterior pituitary hormones.
Outline the functions of hormones secreted by the major endocrine glands:
the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands and the pancreas.
Discuss the anatomic features of the pancreatic islets.
Identify some of the minor endocrine glands and the functions of the hormones they secrete: the ovaries, testes, thymus, pineal body, and placenta.
