OB/GYN: OB/GYN Foundational Knowledge

Green Clock Hours: 0.50

The obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) medical specialty focuses on surgical and medical treatment of diseases of the female genital system, including the ovaries, uterine tubes (fallopian tubes), uterus, vagina, accessory glands, and external genital organs. Codes for procedures to diagnose and treat these conditions are found in the Female Genital System Surgery section of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code set. This course reviews the basic anatomy of the female genital system as part of the foundational knowledge needed for appropriate reporting of the obstetrical and gynecological CPT codes (59000-59899). This course also introduces the learner to the format of the codes, pertinent guidelines, and common modifiers used with the female genital system codes in the CPT code set. A current copy of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®), Professional Edition is strongly recommended to optimize your understanding of the content covered.

Important Note
The CPT code set is designated for reporting physician services and services provided by organizations or facilities in specific circumstances. Use of the term "physician" throughout this course is not intended to indicate that other qualified health care professionals (QHPs) or individual entities (e.g., hospital or home health agency) may not report the service. In selected instances, specific instructions may define a service as limited to certain professionals or limited to other entities.

The codes and information in this course receive a comprehensive review annually and are updated as needed.
