An Introduction to CPT Coding: Understanding CPT: Format and Structure

Green Clock Hours: 0.50

The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) is a code set developed and maintained by the American Medical Association (AMA) that describes physicians' and other qualified healthcare professionals' medical services and procedures. CPT is also the designated code set for reporting services provided by organizations or facilities in specific circumstances. This course covers the basic structure, format, and usage of the CPT code set. It will also provide an overview of the background of CPT and the process for creating a CPT code. The purpose of this course is to guide the learner through the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codebook layout, sections, and appendices, and the format of CPT codes, as well as the code symbols and terminology used throughout the codebook. A current copy of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Professional Edition, is strongly recommended to optimize your understanding of the content covered.
Important Note

Use of the term "physician" throughout this course is not intended to indicate that other qualified health care professionals (QHPs) or individual entities (e.g., hospital or home health agency) may not report the service. In selected instances, specific instructions may define a service as limited to certain professionals or limited to other entities.

The codes and information in this course receive a comprehensive review annually and are updated as needed.
