The free water protocol (FWP) was developed to decrease the risk of dehydration in individuals with swallowing disorders. This module outlines how to determine which patients are appropriate for FWP and guidelines for successfully and safely implementing it.
Ashley W. Downs, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist in North Carolina who provides diagnosis and treatment of speech, language, and cognitive disorders to both geriatric and pediatric populations across a variety of settings. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders from East Carolina University and went on to complete her Master of Science degree in speech-language pathology at ECU as well. She has almost a decade of experience assessing and treating individuals in the outpatient clinic setting, schools, daycares, skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, and teletherapy. She is licensed by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and has her national certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
