Individuals who require tracheostomies, with or without ventilator support, often experience communication and swallowing dysfunction. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are an important part of the interprofessional care of these patients. This module provides SLPs with an overview of tracheostomies and guidelines for the bedside evaluation of swallowing and communication including trialing of speaking valves.
