Overview of Family Therapy

Family therapy nurtures development and encourages positive change in relationships and interactions within families. Focus is placed on the family unit and its dynamics rather than the problems of an individual family member. The family itself becomes the client. In this course, you will learn the history and theoretical foundations, as well as assessment methods, approaches, and techniques used in family therapy.
The goal of this educational program is to provide behavioral health counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and social workers in health and human services settings with basic skills and knowledge for the practice of family therapy.

She is also a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) and has particular interest in resilience and secondary traumatic stress among behavioral health providers. Andrew Pickering is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with experience working in both inpatient and outpatient behavioral healthcare settings. He provides individual and family therapy in a private practice setting and specializes in working with couples, adolescents, divorce related issues, and chronic mental illness. He provides clinical supervision and consultation for Marriage and Family Therapy interns with focus on multicultural issues. Andrew also conducts group therapy and family psycho-education groups on an inpatient behavior health unit and has experience with mental health assessment and crisis intervention.
