Addiction is a treatable but complex disease. Twelve-step programs are a popular complement to formalized treatment but many professionals have no first-hand experience of what 12-step programs are really all about. It is important to know and appreciate the benefits and limitations of 12-step programs and how to encourage individuals who feel 12-step program participation can support them in their recovery. The goal of this educational program is to provide alcohol and drug counselors, professional counselors, and social workers in health and human service settings with information about 12-step programs related to the steps and their purpose, features of 12-step meetings, and their benefits and limitations.
