Many early behaviorists were concerned about the side effects of punishment to address aberrant behavior. As a result, researchers sought to address the cause or “function” of behavior. This led to the identification of practices associated with functional assessment. Functional assessment is a widely used approach for identifying variables that play a role in the display of certain behaviors. This course will identify some recent refinements of functional assessment and current research.
