ELNEC Critical Care Module 5: Cultural and Spiritual Considerations

Green Clock Hours: 1.25

This module will give you an overview of cultural and spiritual considerations in palliative care. We certainly live in a very diverse world, and it is critical that all healthcare professionals understand and respect cultural and spiritual beliefs and traditions. The assessment of culture and spirituality as well as the interventions that support personhood and quality of life are essential in providing excellent palliative care, especially in critical care settings. Throughout this module, you will see that culturally competent care includes recognition of multiple factors (e.g., ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, etc.). Cultural factors significantly influence communication with patients and families, and this can be very challenging in critical care. Working with the interdisciplinary team in providing a spiritual assessment is a very important opportunity, as it provides a chance to reduce spiritual distress and assure cultural competency.

The content in this course is applicable to nursing professionals in critical care settings as well as hospice and palliative care.
