As people age, there is an increased risk of developing sarcopenia, a condition characterized by losses of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and functional ability. This results in muscle weakness and impaired performance. Between the ages of 60 to 70 years old, as many as 13% of patients may experience sarcopenia. For those who are 80 years or older, the likelihood of having sarcopenia can reach 50%. It is important that healthcare professionals can identify and address this common health issue. By understanding the potential causes and resulting effects and providing education regarding prevention measures, providers may improve patient outcomes and quality of life. This educational offering provides information regarding the causes, contributing factors, potential risks, and possible consequences of this condition. This course will also review specific prevention measures and information about the management of sarcopenia.
