End-stage lung disease is a common hospice primary diagnosis with a disease trajectory including multiple exacerbations and stabilizations. In order to minimize exacerbations, hospice clinicians require assessment skills including the proper inhaler technique demonstrated by patients and recognition of the most appropriate therapies, given standard and new inhalation products. This course will review the main features of COPD and its grades as well as common co-morbidities that complicate prognosis and COPD disease trajectory. Palliative care and its role in advanced COPD is summarized along with advance care planning and treatment choices. Finally, the learner is led through development of a palliative care plan including symptom management of dyspnea, cough, anxiety and depression.
