Moving Past Stereotypes With the Roma

Green Clock Hours: 1.00

This course introduces the Roma or Romani (previously called “gypsies”). It presents common Romani values, beliefs, and practices related to healthcare. It also provides insight into the promotion of culturally competent care so providers can better care for this patient population. The Roma are a particularly diverse group, having migrated to multiple geographic areas throughout the world. Providers can use generalizations about Roma cultural practices as a starting point for patient and family assessments, but they need to ask Romani patients and their families about their unique values and practices. As North America becomes more culturally diverse, providing culturally congruent care to patients and their families and integrating cultural values, beliefs, and practices into care plans, become crucial to increase patient and family satisfaction and improve healthcare outcomes.
