Worldwide, suicide was the 18th leading cause of death in 2016, with the highest rates found in countries with advanced healthcare. Those with substance use, borderline personality disorder, anorexia nervosa, depression, and bipolar disorder have the highest risk. One area that has for many years had a higher suicide rate than the national average is the Western states. Washington state ranks 26th among states, with a suicide rate of 14.9 people per 100,000 population, which is not as significant as some Western states, but still above the national average of 12.6 people per 100,000. This course provides nurses, advanced practice nurses, licensed vocational nurses, physicians, physician assistants, social workers, and psychologists with information about the issue of suicide and its prevention strategies and will help them meet the Washington State requirement on suicide prevention.
