Bariatric Surgery Update

Green Clock Hours: 1.00

Nearly 70% of adults in the United States are overweight. Of those, more than one-third are obese. Shockingly, 20.6% of adolescents ages 12 to 19 are obese, 17.4% of children ages 6 to 11 are obese, and 9.4% of children ages 2 to 5 are obese. In 2014, Americans spent an average of $1,901 per obese individual to directly treat obesity and obesity-related diseases/conditions such as knee replacements from wear, medications for type 2 diabetes, and other complications seen less frequently in nonobese patients. Obesity costs America $149.4 billion annually in health-related care. Weight loss surgery (WLS) is no longer considered experimental or cosmetic; the National Institutes of Health suggests consideration of surgical weight-loss procedures for clinically severe obese people (BMI > 40 kg/m2) and those with a BMI greater than 35 kg/m2 who have certain medical conditions. This course will provide an overview of the bariatric surgical options and of the care of patients who have undergone bariatric surgery.
