Assessment and Treatment of Stimulant Use Disorders

Green Clock Hours: 1.25

This course provides an overview of stimulant use disorders with a specific focus on methamphetamine use disorders. Methamphetamine is the second most commonly used illicit drug worldwide after marijuana (Degenhardt & Hall, 2012). According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, nearly 440,000 individuals reported using methamphetamine in the United States in the past month and 2.1 million had used in the past year; the average age of a new user was 19.7 years old (NIDA, 2013). The chemical make-up of methamphetamines makes it relatively easy, yet extremely dangerous to manufacture, simple to acquire illicitly, and very difficult to treat once an individual is addicted. In this course, you will learn about the components of assessment of methamphetamine use and abuse, as well as best practices for treatment interventions with a focus on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and the Matrix Model of intensive outpatient treatment for people with stimulant use disorders.
