Interventions for Feeding and Swallowing for Persons with Dementia

Individuals with moderate or severe dementia often have impairments in eating and drinking. This course for speech-language pathologists and occupational therapy professionals presents evidence-based and best practice interventions for treating feeding and swallowing impairments. Case studies are used to model clinical reasoning to determine which type of intervention is most effective for each patient and how to determine if an intervention needs to be modified or stopped. Interventions to engage the interprofessional team and caregivers to reinforce interventions are described and best practices in documentation reviewed.

Susan Almon-Matangos, MS/CCC-SLP, is a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist with over 30 years of experience. She obtained her bachelor's degree in psychology from Jacksonville State University and her Master of Science degree in speech-language pathology from The University of Alabama. She worked with clients of all ages and a variety of diagnostic conditions in school, hospital, skilled nursing facility, outpatient clinic, and home health settings. In her previous role as a national clinical director for Aegis Therapies, she created training programs for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology related to the clinical rehabilitation needs of older adults in post-acute care. She currently draws upon her expertise in her role at Relias as Lead Subject Matter Expert Writer for Speech-Language Pathology. Mitzi A. Kweder, MS/CCC-SLP, has been a speech-language pathologist since 1996. She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in speech-language pathology in New York. She has experience in several settings with both pediatrics and geriatrics but spent most of her recent career in the director role in skilled nursing facilities. During that time, she also directed affiliated home health and outpatient operations. Currently, she is the Director of Quality and Standards with AdvantageCare Rehabilitation. In this position, she oversees clinical and operations standards in order to maintain and improve quality of care delivery. She also plays an active role in denials, policy, and compliance processes to promote adherence to laws and regulations of several bodies governing healthcare.
