Every person should be encouraged to have meaningful advance care planning conversations with their health providers to explore and discuss their goals, values, and understanding of their health to guide future end-of-life treatment decisions. For health providers to engage in effective and compassionate advance care planning conversations, they must develop specific communication skills as well as a level of comfort with having these discussions.
This course provides an overview of essential skills and considerations for engaging in sensitive and effective advance care planning conversations. You will learn the most important decision domains to address as outlined in the FIVE WISHES® framework, how to demonstrate compassionate communication, and conversation skills specific to eliciting values-based end-of-life care decisions.

Instructor: Kathleen Taylor
Kathleen Taylor MA, LMHC serves as the Healthcare Advisor for the Five Wishes program. Kathleen has over 27 years of experience in the healthcare and nonprofit sectors. Her passion is centered in improving the healthcare experience for people who are sick and vulnerable, and helping healthcare professionals master skills in cultivating empathy and communicating compassionately. She operates a healthcare consulting practice focused on palliative care communication, strategy and programming. Previously, she served for a decade as the Director of community engagement at the country's largest nonprofit hospice organization where she led their advance care planning education programs, and developed their first training program on empathy and compassion in patient care. She also worked as a hospice counselor serving patients and families coping with life-limiting illness, caregiving and grief.
Kathleen is a Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Qualified Clinical Supervisor. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology at Stetson University, a Master's degree in Mental Health and Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of South Florida, and a Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management & Innovation at the University of Tampa's John Sykes College of Business.
