Dementia is the 5th leading cause of death in people over the age of 65 and despite literature focus on this disease state, no new medications have been developed that are indicated for disease state in over 10 years. With the increasing geriatric population, clinicians need to understand the benefits of discontinuing cognitive-based therapy at end of life and manage symptoms via non-pharmacological methods and medications other than antipsychotics.

As Clinical Pharmacy Lead at Enclara Pharmacia, Marisa serves as a clinical leadership resource with an aim of enhancing the training and enrichment of the Patient Care Operations pharmacist team. She also maintains extensive experience and knowledge of pharmacy practice in hospice and palliative care to support communications and stay abreast of changes in practice that impact patients. Marisa has over 20 years of experience as a pharmacist in various fields including 17 years of hospice pharmacy experience, as well as clinical roles in both the hospital and home infusion settings. Throughout Marisa’s career, she has been continuously involved in the education and training of healthcare professionals and students. Marisa earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Wilkes University, Nesbitt School of Pharmacy and recently earned a Master of Science degree in palliative care from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She completed a 1-year post-graduate pharmacy practice residency program and maintains certification as a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS).
