Caring for Caregivers: Supporting Individuals that are Supporting Others

Caregivers of all kinds, from physicians to family members, experience similar stressors related to the support and treatment they provide. The same attributes that make for a qualified caregiver such as empathy, sensitivity, and compassion can make them vulnerable to burnout and psychological trauma. In situations of intense and ongoing need, even with effective self-care practices and social connection, maladaptive ways of coping can surface and health can suffer. Based on what is known about chronic stress and trauma, it is imperative for behavioral health professionals to provide timely, effective treatment and support to caregivers.
The goal of this course is to provide addictions professionals, counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and social workers in health and human services settings with approaches for supporting and treating caregivers.

Stephanie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Professional Writing from The College of New Jersey and a Master of Social Work degree from Rutgers University. She is also a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) and has particular interest in resilience and secondary traumatic stress among behavioral health providers. The majority of Stephanie’s work has included behavioral health counseling and medical case management. Stephanie served as part of the National Health Service Corps from 2016-2018, providing outpatient counseling to underserved populations including military service members and their families. Pamela Green is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Registered Play Therapist. She has devoted over thirteen years to helping children and families within vulnerable populations heal from and overcome the many obstacles they face. Pam also has extensive experience in Crisis Intervention as she was an Intensive Family Intervention Team Leader for five years and spent several years working with a Domestic Violence Intervention Program as an advocate and a therapist to help survivors heal from their traumatic experiences, navigate legal systems, and access much-needed resources to change their lives for the better. Pam also provided clinical direction and supervision as zone leader for a 10-county, community mental health agency for several years. In addition, she has experience in work rehabilitation for people with disabilities across a range of ages and disability types.
