It is crucial that correctional administrators working in adult and juvenile correctional facilities do all they can to create an environment that respects and protects the constitutional and human rights of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and intersex (LGBTQI) populations. Therefore, this course is designed for those who work in roles related to policy development and administration of correctional facilities. As an introduction, this course provides information on definitions of key terms related to LGBTQI individuals and discusses why addressing issues specific to LGBTQI populations within a correctional environment is important. In addition, this course will examine some of the concerns and challenges that exist within correctional facilities when identifying and addressing issues unique to the LGBTQI population. Finally, this course provides recommendations to consider when developing policy and procedure to assure they are designed to protect the constitutional and human rights of LGBTQI populations in custodial settings. By integrating information about LGBTQI individuals into policies, practices, and organizational culture, agencies can better meet the needs of these individuals in custody while increasing the skill level of staff who work with this population daily. Please Note: Throughout this course, the phrase “individuals in custody” will refer to detainees/inmates in adult facilities as well as residents in juvenile facilities.
