Use of Group Intervention in the Educational Setting

 

This course discusses the use of group intervention in the education setting. By completing this course, you will learn about the research background and current literature support for the use of group intervention with children. You will be able to describe how group intervention is applied as a related service provider to the individual education plans and in following mandates established by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004. You will learn of the barriers and facilitators to implementation of group intervention. This course will also cover how to identify a) potential populations of children who may participate in group intervention and b) education and related services team members who may assist in the development and implementation of school-based group intervention. Lastly, you will discover what’s necessary to develop activity plans for group intervention and describe the mechanisms for data collection from group intervention sessions. Instructor: Alyssa LaForme Fiss, PT, PhD, PCS
Alyssa LaForme Fiss, PT, PhD, PCS is an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Mercer University in Atlanta, GA, where she teaches the pediatric and research curriculum. She received her Bachelors and Masters in Physical Therapy from The Ohio State University and completed her Doctoral studies in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Fiss has conducted research on the use of group intervention in pediatric physical therapy and the use of sensorimotor groups for young children with disabilities. She also participates in multi-site research examining determinants of movement and participation in life activities of young children with cerebral palsy.
