This course will discuss traumatic brain injuries in the older population, a more frequently occurring diagnosis as the population ages. It will discuss 2 different types of geriatric TBI patients: those who suffered a new TBI and those who have a history of TBI and are now aging with that injury. Assessment, management, and the influence of comorbidities on recovery will be discussed.

Pamela Smith is a professor of speech pathology at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in acquired neurogenic disorders of communication, cognition and swallowing as well as psycholinguistics. She has over 30 years of experience as a speech-language pathologist including work in acute care, acute rehabilitation, long term care and home health settings. She is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and a member of Special Interest Group #2 Neurogenic Communication Disorders and Special Interest Group #15 Gerontology.
