Human trafficking is the exploitation of individuals through force, fraud, or coercion for labor or commercial sex. It is a significant issue in the U.S. and worldwide. Those affected by human trafficking are often hidden by their traffickers, but studies indicate that many of these individuals come into contact with healthcare professionals (Administration for Strategic Preparedness & Response [ASPR], n.d.). This places healthcare professionals in a unique position to identify the signs and risk factors of human trafficking, enabling them to take action if they suspect a person may be affected by human trafficking.
