Sexual orientation refers to a person’s sexual attraction or romantic interest (American Psychological Association, 2021). It is always best to address an individual in the way they would like to be described when a preference is expressed. Assumptions about a person’s sexual orientation can lead to being unintentionally offensive or hurtful.
