The two main types of pulmonary edema are cardiogenic and noncardiogenic. Although the presenting signs and symptoms of both types of pulmonary edema may appear the same, the causes and, therefore, the treatments vary significantly. Noncardiogenic pulmonary edema often leads to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
