Swallowing is one of the most complex neuromuscular functions the body performs. Impairment of any part of the swallowing process is dysphagia. Because of the complexity of dysphagia and the effects on an individual’s health, it is important for healthcare organizations to provide comprehensive care for the person with dysphagia. To provide comprehensive care, using an interdisciplinary team approach is recommended in the identification and management of dysphagia. This course covers the basic anatomy and physiology of the swallowing mechanism, the process for identifying the presence of dysphagia, the various techniques used in the management of dysphagia, and the role of each team member in this management.
